Charitocracy's 36th check to August winner National Institute for Reproductive Health for $1335

We have good news about August winner National Institute for Reproductive Health, right after this quick update...

Roadtrip Half Over, or Roadtrip Half Left?

It just so happens that Jessica and I, halfway through our epic family RV trip, find ourselves auspiciously with a real Internet connection at a campground near Mesa Verde, Colorado. Perfect for blogging about our new winner! And today we also celebrate 3 years of Charitocracy being online, but we can save that celebration for the end of our birthday month, when we'll be back home at Charitocracy HQ with proper birthday cake baking capabilities.

August 2019 winner National Institute for Reproductive Health

Last night we named Charitocracy's 36th monthly winner. That's 3 years of winners!! Congratulations to National Institute for Reproductive Health, nominated by donor Bethany (her second winning nom)! They build power to change policy, galvanize support, and normalize women’s decisions about abortion and contraception. You can find their web site here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to NIRH.

Before you go, check out this 5 minute film covering how the National Institute for Reproductive Health helps promote reproductive freedom. Then feel good about your part in our collective $1335+ grant to help with their work!

July 2019 winner World Central Kitchen

Charitocracy's 35th check to July winner World Central Kitchen for $1393

We have good news about July winner World Central Kitchen, right after this quick update...

Sharing is Caring

You may have noticed or read about it when we unlocked most of the site (except voting!) for non-donors and search engines to see. Now as part of this effort, social sharing of nominee pages works, too! In the "Don't Be So Antisocial" social media widget on the side or bottom of every nominee voting page you'll find icons for Facebook and Twitter which reveal share buttons to share the page. Alternatively, you can manually copy and paste the URL from your web browser. You can even drop that URL into a text message and have the spiffy share image pop up automatically. FYI, social sharing works on blog pages like this one, too.

So share your favorite causes far and wide with friends and family and strangers and arch enemies! Beg them, seduce them, guilt trip them, whatever you have to do. Just get them to join Charitocracy and maybe even vote for your favorite cause!

July 2019 winner World Central Kitchen

Last night we named Charitocracy's 35th monthly winner. Congratulations to World Central Kitchen, nominated by donor Stephanie. They have expanded globally and developed into a Chef Network creating smart solutions to hunger and poverty. You can find their web site here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to World Central Kitchen next week.

Before you go, check out this 7-year-old short film about World Central Kitchen in its infancy, working only in Haiti, and revel in how far they've come since then, responding to 13 disasters last year. Then feel good about your part in our collective $1393+ grant to help with their work!

Have a great August and be sure to log into Charitocracy to update your votes or nominate a new cause!

June 2019 winner Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation

Charitocracy's 34th check to June winner Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation for $1530

We have good news about June winner Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation, right after this quick update...

Summer Travel

I returned home at midnight last night, just as our new Charitocracy winner was being selected. It's the first dark night I've seen for weeks. I've been adventure traveling with my son near the Arctic, spanning summer solstice, where at best the sky dims a bit for a couple hours. It's strange having to once again plan my time around something as pesky as when the sun will be out!

Now I look forward to settling down and enjoying some actual summer heat before hitting the road again with Jessica and the kids for 6 weeks in August. We'll be embarking on an epic family RV trip with a focus on national parks. But my Charitocracy laptop is no stranger to the nomadic lifestyle, so you can expect things to roll on without disruption. There just may be a day or two in there when we have no access to Internet. Charitocracy pretty much runs itself these days, anyway!

June 2019 winner Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation

Last night we named Charitocracy's 34th monthly winner. Congratulations to Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation, nominated by donors katnadam0616. They support and shape the direction of research into the cure, prevention, and management of cerebral palsy. You can find their web site here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to CPARF next week.

Before you go, check out CPARF's video about how something as simple as a wheelchair can transform lives. Then feel good about your part in our collective $1530+ grant to help with their work!

May 2019 winner ProPublica

Charitocracy's 33rd check to May winner ProPublica for $1649

We have good news about May winner ProPublica, right after this quick update...

NYU help has arrived

Summer's almost here! We're still cranking away, making steady improvements to Charitocracy. Many are the brainchild of Debbie Chu, one of our NYU collaborators who's going above and beyond her course credits to continue helping us out. She's feeding great ideas onto my todo list, and I'm trying to knock them off the list ASAP. Go team!

May 2019 winner ProPublica

Last night we named Charitocracy's 33rd monthly winner. Congratulations to ProPublica, nominated by donor zardoz. They are Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalists who expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust by government, business, and other institutions. You can find their web site here.

April 2019 winner National Military Family Association

Charitocracy's 32nd check to April winner National Military Family Association for $1713

We have good news about April winner National Military Family Association, right after this quick update...

Lifting the veil

I've been working with a team of students at NYU this semester who are providing invaluable feedback on our marketing efforts. In a nutshell, we should gear the web site and marketing efforts more toward prospective donors vs. our current donors. As a first step toward this, I've opened up more of the site so it's visible to non-donors and search engines. Namely, the list of nominees and discussion page for each are no longer hidden behind a "pay-wall." Voting of course remains exclusive to donors! ($1 per month is not too much to ask, right?!)

We held a really productive board meeting last week, and great ideas abound. Be on the lookout for more changes at Charitocracy and a new marketing promotion... Donors, get a head start by inviting friends to join us now. It'll give you a competitive advantage, and the stakes will be high!

April 2019 winner National Military Family Association

On Tuesday night we named Charitocracy's 32nd monthly winner. Congratulations to National Military Family Association. They offer support and programs for service members, their spouses, and their children. NMFA has been in the Top 3 for 6 months, and in the Top 10 for 2 years! You can find their web site here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to National Military Family Association next week.

Before you go, check out this video hot off the presses from NMFA. It shows one of the ways they support military families: making lives easier for military kids who have to bounce from school to school. Then feel good about your part in our collective $1713+ grant to help with their work!

March 2019 winner Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Charitocracy's 31st check to March winner Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for $1800

We have good news about March winner Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, right after this quick update...

Welcome, Spring!

We have survived another winter, Charitocracy friends. Are you seeing the color green again in your daily life? I see growing, blooming, signs of life after dormancy. It rekindles in me a desire to nurture those around me who need some extra TLC.

If you have some extra green on hand, consider sharing it with your friends! Know someone who could use a splash of extra sunshine right now? Gift them a year of Charitocracy for $12. A simple, thoughtful gift out of the blue. No special occasion, just because!

March 2019 winner Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Last night we named Charitocracy's 31st monthly winner. Congratulations to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. They fund drug development and research to treat and eventually cure the disease. Also congrats to donor jmw615 for nominating it during Charitocracy's first week in existence, and to the others near and dear to us touched by CF who helped push it toward its eventual win 31 months later! You can find their web site here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation next week. (Thanks to the generous donor who already bumped us up to an even $1800 already! You are amazing.)

Welcome, Brandi

Learn more about Brandi and our other fantastic board members on our About Us page.

February 2019 winner Carroll's Kitchen

Last night we named Charitocracy's 30th monthly winner. Congratulations to Carroll's Kitchen. They provide healthy employment to women leaving crisis. Also congrats to donor spencer for nominating it! He nominated it on New Year's Day, just days after joining Charitocracy, and managed to squeak out a win in his 2nd month as a donor, never mind 2nd month shepherding a nominee. I call it beginner's luck. But it helps that he nominated such an amazing and deserving cause... You can find their web site here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to Carroll's Kitchen next week.

January 2019 winner The You Rock Foundation

Charitocracy's 29th check to January winner The You Rock Foundation for $1893

We have good news about January winner The You Rock Foundation, right after this quick update...

Double the Benj, Double the Fun

For the new year, I've worked out a new schedule with my day job that permits me to devote both Thursdays and Fridays to Charitocracy while I'm home. (All bets are off when I'm traveling for work!) But this should nearly double my Charitocracy productivity. Or as I like to call it, my Charictivity.

It still leaves me overwhelmed by all the things I'd like to get done in those 2 days each week. Thanks to all your poll responses over the last 2 weeks, I'm armed with a bit of guidance on some of the low-hanging fruit to pursue:

  • Make it immediately clear that we're a legit 501(c)(3) run strictly by volunteers where 100% of your donation goes to winning causes. We're not skimmers or scammers! We use optional 8.3% tips and employer matching donations to cover our minimal costs.
  • Amplify the positive theme that resonated the most with our donors: that while they can only afford relatively small monthly donations, they love the group-giving aspect that super-sizes their donation into a bigger, more meaningful one.
  • Don't spend more on ads. Instead, we should seek media attention to grow. If you have any leads as to where/how we should pitch a story about Charitocracy, please do get in touch!

January 2019 winner The You Rock Foundation

Last night we named Charitocracy's 29th monthly winner. Congratulations to The You Rock Foundation, and to donor misadowling for nominating it! At You Rock, rock musicians share their stories to spread awareness and help battle stigmas attached to mental illness. You can find their web site here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to You Rock next week.

Before you go, check out The You Rock Foundation's latest video featuring Brandon Mendenhall, star of the award-winning documentary, Mind Over Matter, and feel good about your part in our collective $1893+ grant to help with their work!

December 2018 winner Malala Fund

Charitocracy's 28th check to December winner Malala Fund for $1840

We have good news about December winner Malala Fund, right after this quick update...

1000 Likes

What a great way to end the year. In the last days of December our Facebook page like odometer rolled past 1000. We had 122 people share our ad, and over 150 new likes in December. It's a nice milestone to put in the rearview mirror as we enter 2019.

For our next trick, we'll try to get some of our new likers to join us as donors at Charitocracy. 5 times as many people like us as donate and participate. $12 is our new, lower, minimum annual donation which may help. But mostly it'll be a matter of getting our message out there, and to belt it out louder than the background social media noise. Your continued support sharing Charitocracy posts is greatly appreciated, amplifying our signal while reducing our costs. Thanks!

December 2018 winner Malala Fund

Last night on New Year's Eve, they dropped a ball at the stroke of midnight in Times Square to mark Charitocracy's 28th monthly winner. Congratulations to Malala Fund, and to donor SuZQ for nominating it. This is her second winning nomination after Together We Rise. Strong work, SuZQ, and can't wait to see the next one! You can find their web site here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to Malala Fund next week.

Malala Fund breaks down the barriers preventing more than 130 million girls around the world from going to school.

Malala is fighting to give back to girls what poverty, war and discrimination tried to take away. Donate today to help us give all girls the opportunity to learn and lead.

“I believe we will see every girl in school in my lifetime.” -Malala

Before you go, check out Malala Fund's great video message to G20 leaders ahead of their Argentina meeting, and feel good about your part in our collective $1840+ grant to help with their work!

November 2018 winner Epilepsy Foundation

Charitocracy's 27th check to November winner Epilepsy Foundation for $1701

We have good news about November winner Epilepsy Foundation, right after this quick update...

Happy Giving Season!

Since Thanksgiving we've been spreading the word about Charitocracy by offering $1 for each new page like and $5 for each share. That resulted in an extra $240 in the November pot, and hopefully will have a positive impact on the December pot as well. Keeps those shares and page like invitations going out to your connections on Facebook and elsewhere!

The best way to help grow Charitocracy's donor base and increase the size of the monthly pot is to give Charitocracy to a friend. Gifts start at the same $12 as signing up yourself. $1 or more goes into each monthly pot for a year, and your recipient can vote for the winners. You'll immediately receive a PDF (like this) with the gift redemption code. It includes a foldable gift box and cheat sheet describing how Charitocracy works. You can hand-deliver or email the PDF to the lucky recipient at the time of your choosing. And perhaps the best part is that your gift is tax-deductible!

Meanwhile, Donor Erin Burke had a great idea she shared on Facebook a month ago: if all 200+ active donors at Charitocracy were each to give Charitocracy to at least one friend or family member, we could double our numbers. Ambitious? Yes. Would it be awesome if it happened? YES. Heck, I'd be happy to boost our donor count 10%, never mind 100%! Let's get some new faces on board before the end of the year. For $12/each, you could make it rain Charitocracy love onto your entire shopping list. 💦☃️🎁🥰

November 2018 winner Epilepsy Foundation

Last night we voted in Charitocracy's 27th monthly winner. Congratulations to Epilepsy Foundation, and to donor Coppcarr for nominating it. She discovered Epilepsy Foundation while seeking resources and support after her daughter's epilepsy diagnosis. You can find their web site here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to Epilepsy Foundation next week.

The mission of the Epilepsy Foundation is:
