100 Nominees!

In June we hit the 100 nominee milestone. And the 100th nominee was none other than Color of Change! I'll blog about it soon, but here's a sneak preview of the video I made to celebrate. Unmuting is highly recommended! 🙂

100 nominees is a real accomplishment, and it's all thanks to you nominators out there. 72 of you, and counting! Thanks.

June 2020 winner Color of Change

Last night we named Charitocracy's 46th monthly winner. Congratulations to Color of Change, nominated by donor carolinatim. They design campaigns powerful enough to end practices that unfairly hold Black people back, and champion solutions that move us all forward. You can find their web page here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to Color of Change. (We've already received several generous pot sweeteners today, thanks!!)

Before you go, check out this short video. It shows some of the many recent changes Color of Change has helped provoke. Then feel good about your part in our collective $1434+ grant to help with their ongoing work!

Productivity Struggle Bus

I just wanted to make it official: I've been struggling to remain productive during this pandemic. Without my house empty during the day, and without my twice weekly escapes to my favorite coffee shop / office away from home, I'm not getting as much done. I have big plans for Charitocracy, but they're progressing slowly. I do what I can each day. I don't beat myself up about it too much. I live more in the moment, and these weeks are zipping by. I look at this as (maybe?) a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to really live (and be present) full-time with my family. I'm enjoying the hell out of them. Sooner or later things will go back to "normal." I'll be firing on all cylinders again. Kicking ass, taking names, growing Charitocracy. And I bet I'll miss these stay-at-home days forever after.

May 2020 winner Rapha International

Last night we named Charitocracy's 45th monthly winner. Congratulations to Rapha International, nominated by donor MADNK, who happens to be my own dear mother. (Hi, ma!) 😘 She nominated it back in October 2017, close to 3 years ago, and it's slowly made its way to the top! In fact, as of last night it was tied with Feeding America for number of votes (22.2) AND number of voters casting at least partial votes for them (25). The next tie-breaker was number of likes, where Rapha had 26 vs. Feeding America's 24. 😲 Anyway, thanks for keeping things exciting, everyone! Rapha International work to end trafficking and sexual exploitation of kids via aftercare for survivors, prevention for the vulnerable, and awareness for all. You can find their web page here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to Rapha.

Before you go, check out this short video explaining the work and heart of Rapha International, and feel good about your part in our collective $1281+ grant to help with their ongoing work!

COVID-19

Crazy how a month ago this was a foreign concept. Coronavirus was hitting China hard, starting to spread in Europe, but still seemed a distant threat in time and space to most of us. Now it's on all our minds all day every day, and has altered nearly every aspect of our daily lives. And there's no light yet at the end of the tunnel...

I wrote a blog post last week about where to send coronavirus donations. I covered some of our Charitocracy nominees that are having a positive impact during this crisis, and called on you to consider nominating other causes that can help during the pandemic, and provided some resources to help your discover them.

If like many of us you're facing financial uncertainty during this time, please don't hesitate to reach out and I can hit the pause button on your recurring Charitocracy donations. We'll get through this together. ❤️

March 2020 winner RIP Medical Debt

Last night we named Charitocracy's 43rd monthly winner. Congratulations to RIP Medical Debt, nominated by 2nd-time winning donors Alistair and Rebecca. RIP Medical Debt empower donors to forgive the billions in oppressive medical debt at pennies on the dollar, so far $1.4 billion for ~650,000 Americans. You can find their web page here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to RIP Medical Debt.

Before you go, check out this news footage of Nashville resident Jaclyn Jones whose medical debts have been dramatically reduced thanks to March winner RIP Medical Debt. Then feel good about your part in our collective $1281+ grant, which should eliminate over $128,000 in medical debts like Ms. Jones's!

Charitocracy's 42nd check to February winner Sea Change OBX for $1262

We have good news about February winner Sea Change OBX, right after this quick update...

This is how you Charitocracy!

In February we had the biggest influx of new donors at Charitocracy since the first few months of our existence. 38 new donors! And most of them joined thanks to the recruiting efforts of our new nominees, the lion's share coming from, you guessed it, the winning cause. In fact, other than hurricane relief winners, no cause has gone from new nominee to winner so quickly, and only Hurricane Harvey relief has attracted more votes.

So if you have a favorite cause and a squad of friends and family who you believe will support your effort, February's winner has proven it's doable. And the beauty is that if/when your cause wins, 11 other worthy causes also benefit from your Charitocracy fundraising. So without further ado...

February 2020 winner Sea Change OBX

Last night we named Charitocracy's 42nd monthly winner. Congratulations to Sea Change OBX, nominated by donor jennagwaltney. They work directly with the Outer Banks Latino community to promote education and encourage cross-cultural understanding. You can find their web page here.

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to Sea Change Partnership. ❤️ Here's how they plan to spend it:

Your donation will go towards publishing a bilingual cookbook of original OBX Latino recipes. Each recipe will include a personal narrative and a photo from the country of origin. The proceeds will sustain our ongoing programs.

Before you go, check out this video (en español) from winner Sea Change OBX, welcoming members of the community to attend their free English classes. Newsflash

This just in: Benj retired from his day job yesterday.

It's the same as quitting, but without the connotation of ill will or dissatisfaction on either side. There's no presumption of leaving for greener pastures at another company. The fact is, I'm still in love with my former employer, the work I was doing there, and all the colleagues with whom I shared the experience. Instead retirement comes with the implied acknowledgement of one's mortality and time being of the essence. I feel that urgency every day.

This is a weird day, my first day unemployed in a long long time. Thanks for giving me the best reason to take this leap of faith: Charitocracy. Without you, it would just be a cool idea with $0 grants going out each month. Now I'll have more time to spend growing Charitocracy, giving it the closer attention it desperately needs!

January 2019 winner Gifts of Hope Unlimited

Last night we named Charitocracy's 41st monthly winner. Congratulations to Gifts of Hope Unlimited, nominated by donor Marthaek. They support and assist individuals affected by relationship violence gain access to resources for a safe and empowered future. You can find their web page here.

Hindsight 2020

Looking back at 2019 from this futuristic sounding year of 2020, I see 12 thoughtfully selected, well-deserving causes receiving our group donations totaling over $18,000. I see Charitocracy crossing the $50,000 milestone in total grants to date. In the website I see incremental improvements, tearing down the "pay wall" and making social sharing easier. But I also see an endless struggle to attract more donors...

I'll write a dedicated blog post about it within the next month or so, but for now a cryptic teaser: 2020 will be a game-changer for Charitocracy. My foresight isn't quite as clear as my hindsight, so I can't promise it will end well. But status quo isn't going to cut it. So watch this space!

December 2019 winner No Kid Hungry

Last night we named Charitocracy's 40th monthly winner. Congratulations to No Kid Hungry, nominated by donor the_fIves. They work to end childhood hunger, and won't be done until every single child in America has the food they need to grow up healthy and strong. You can find their web page here.

This Tuesday is Giving Tuesday

I hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving! Something for me to be thankful for: last month, we crossed the $50,000 mark. Nicely done, team! I appreciate you. Big time.

I'll keep it really simple and ask you to do one thing between now and Tuesday. Convince someone, anyone, just one person, to join Charitocracy. A friend, family member, partner in business, partner in life, partner in crime, complete stranger sharing your table at a coffee shop. Your best friend, your only friend, your frenemy, your nemesis. A mentor, protégé, magician, barista. A brother, sister, half, step, in-law, twin separated at birth. A pet that inherited your great-aunt's fortune. (Don't ask me, these are your people.)

Just log in and invite them over email or social media:

One more donor at Charitocracy means one more new voice in our nomination and election process, and more dollars to share with the next year full of monthly winning charities. Amplify your impact!

Sharing is Caring

Over the past couple weeks I've made a big push to improve the experience of sharing at Charitocracy. Whether you nominate a cause, vote for a nominee, or just read about one in our blog, you can share that with your friends and family on social media. That's how we'll attract new donors and more dollars in the monthly pot, without the cost of ads. You are our advertising department!

Sharing Is Caring

Many of the building blocks, such as opening the site content to non-donors, creating share images for each nominated cause, and writing one-liner descriptions, I've slowly completed throughout 2019. But now you can click on those Facebook and Twitter share buttons, and put all my work... to work! While you're at it, go ahead and Like/Follow us if you don't already. Thanks, as always, for supporting us.

October 2019 winner Reach Out and Read

At midnight on Halloween we named Charitocracy's 38th monthly winner. Congratulations to Reach Out and Read, nominated by donor RoamX. Jessica and I returned home last weekend from our epic family RV trip, ending with my brother's beautiful and so-much-fun wedding in Montana! Now we're getting back in the groove of our normal routine, inspired by the end of another month, and its well-deserving winner:

September 2019 winner Dorian Relief @ Red Cross

Last night we named Charitocracy's 37th monthly winner. Congratulations to Dorian Relief @ Red Cross, nominated by donor TdotWING. The American Red Cross provides food, shelter, comfort, and hope to families affected by Hurricane Dorian. You can find their Dorian web page here.

Now for a big shout-out to TdotWING. We have a handful of two-time winning nominators, and had one other three-time winner (props, Stephanie!). But this is a brand new Charitocracy record, her fourth successful nomination out of four!!
