Independent news exposing abuses of power by government, business, and other institutions, using the moral force of investigative journalism.

Founded in 2007, ProPublica is an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest. Our work focuses exclusively on truly important stories, stories with “moral force.” We do this by producing journalism that shines a light on exploitation of the weak by the strong and on the failures of those with power to vindicate the trust placed in them. In the best traditions of American journalism in the public service, we seek to stimulate positive change. We uncover unsavory practices in order to stimulate reform. We do this in an entirely non-partisan and non-ideological manner, adhering to the strictest standards of journalistic impartiality.

This is a rough read, for sure.  They’ve done surprisingly deep-dives on the circumstances of 134 (and counting) of the estimated 700 to 900 women who died in the U.S. from pregnancy-related causes.

The U.S. has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the developed world. Yet these deaths of women from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth are almost invisible. When a new or expectant mother dies, her obituary rarely mentions the circumstances. Her identity is shrouded by medical institutions, regulators and state maternal mortality review committees. Her loved ones mourn her loss in private. The lessons to be learned from her death are often lost as well.

Here’s a great series of ProPublica stories on the accountability of “Alternative Schools”, charter schools and the like, across the nation.

Stories examine how districts can shunt underperforming students or even dropouts to charter schools. How for-profit schools get money for the state, even for kids who’ve dropped out.  As a result of a story that ran in this series, Florida initiated a deeper investigation into whether charter schools are underreporting the number of dropouts.
